Inspiration

My brother John T. Berger was a courageous Marine Fighter Pilot with the Red Devil’s squadron 232 stationed in Miramar, San Diego. John died in a training accident over Twenty-Nine Palms in his FA-18 jet on July 22, 2003.

The inspiration for witness to remembrance grows out of an art process I have gone through the last several years as I have remembered my brother’s life and death. I took photos of places, objects, and events that reminded me of him and what he loved (apple pie, clouds, airplanes, art, etc.) contemplating his life through photos.

When John was a child the first words he said were “apple pie” at my great grandmother’s house. Apple pie was one of his favorite deserts and so every year on the anniversary of his death and on his birthday I make an apple pie. The above photos are witnesses to this act of remembrance.
