In the Sky

My brother John T. Berger earned his B.S. degree in aeronautical science from Embry Riddle flight school in Arizona. He went on to earn his Navy Wings of Gold in 2001 after two years of training as a U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lieutenant. John completed his training to fly the F/A-18 Hornet in the spring of 2002 and received the Top Gun award for superior performance in air-to-air combat as well as numerous awards for being the No. 1 pilot and a top performer. After his death, his commanding officer wrote “ I am especially proud of his heroic performance during Operation Iraqi Freedom, where John flew many combat flights against a hostile enemy with courage and an unprecedented commitment toward mission success.”

More than all these achievements, my brother was a man of grand dreams and a sense of grand purpose in his life from the time he was a child. He built airplanes, rockets, and dreamed always of flying a jet. He is a man who followed his dreams to the sky and ultimately gave his life for the love of country, family, and friends. He was the best there is in this life; courageous, generous, loving, and with a smile so large you could fall into the depths of it.

I love you Johnny and honor your memory-Your sister, Kimberly
